How HPLC measures purity
High-performance liquid chromatography pushes a dissolved sample through a packed column under pressure. Different components travel through the column at different speeds, so they leave at different times and are detected separately.
The result is a chromatogram: a trace with a peak for each component. The main peak is the target compound, and its share of the total peak area is reported as purity.
- Separates a sample into its components
- Each peak represents a component
- Purity is reported from the main peak’s share
